The Southampton fans who are gathered at the bar in The Transfer Tavern this evening are discussing comments made by their manager with regards to his future.
According to Sky Sports, the former Barcelona defender is eager to stay on the South Coast after leading the club to Europa League qualification despite reports linking him with the vacant managerial position at Everton.
The Dutchman believes he is building something great at St Mary’s and has already met with the board to discuss his future at the club.
With Everton having major funds available it was thought that Koeman was interested in taking over the reigns at Goodison Park this summer, but comments made after the club’s final game of the season by the manager with regards to his future will be music to the board of Southampton’s ears.
Speaking following his side’s 4-1 victory over Crystal Palace, Koeman said: “I still have a one-year contract.
“I spoke to the board and we had the meeting and it’s always my wish to stay because I like the club, fans and players.
“We understand every time its (the ambition) more difficult because we need to improve, and expectation will be higher than it was two years ago and if we have the same ambition again then no problem.”
Our landlord in The Tavern believes that if Koeman does remain at the club it will be a coup for the club and that the Dutch manager will only lead them onto bigger and better things next season.
