Everton supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern in recent weeks following the appointment of Sam Allardyce as the club’s new manager, who has overseen a seven-match unbeaten run to start life as Toffees boss.
The former England chief replaced the sacked Ronald Koeman at the rear end of November with the Merseysiders languishing in the Premier League’s bottom three, but four wins and three draws under Allardyce have moved the Toffees away from the relegation mire and to ninth in the division. And they kept their unbeaten start under the 63-year-old intact on Boxing Day by drawing 0-0 away at West Brom, in turn securing a fifth clean sheet in seven games to remain comfortably inside the top half of the table.
Subsequently, there have been many jubilant Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are likely to be further buoyed by a recent report from Ladbrokes, which suggests that the Toffees have seized the initiative in pursuit of Sevilla’s Steven N’Zonzi.
The 29-year-old is best known to English football fans for his stints at Blackburn Rovers and Stoke City, but has since gone from strength to strength with Spanish outfit Sevilla in helping them win the Europa League back in 2016.
However, the Frenchman has fallen out of favour recently and looks set for a move away in January, and Goodison Park appears to be a likely destination as recent reports detail the Toffees as the 6/5 favourites to secure the midfielder’s signature, ahead of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal at 2/1.
And with the window set to reopen next week, Allardyce could well be closing in on a potentially key deal.
Landlord’s verdict: Steven N’Zonzi was extremely highly-rated during his time at Stoke City, to the point that he earned a move to La Liga outfit Sevilla in 2015.
And although he helped them win the Europa League in 2016 alongside several impressive displays in other competitions, the 29-year-old has fallen down the pecking order and is set for a move away from the club in the forthcoming January transfer window.
And Sam Allardyce’s Everton appears to have seized the initiative as Ladbrokes have them down as the 6/5 favourites to secure his signature ahead of another potential suitor Arsenal (2/1), as the former England chief seeks to improve his squad ahead of the second half of the season.
And given how influential N’Zonzi has been at his previous clubs, this could well be a potentially key January deal for Everton in their bid to challenge for the European places next year.
