England’s first World Cup since 1966 is the talk of the Tavern after a young Three Lions squad sealed victory over Venezuela. No one does senseless hyperbole like English punters, and just like West Ham in 66, it’s the turn of the Everton fans to proclaim themselves the winners.
Five of the victorious side are Everton players, and that doesn’t even include the likes of Tom Davies, Mason Holgate and Brendon Galloway, all of whom are young, English and Toffee, too.
But if the distant future looks bright for the Merseysiders, the near future is a little bit more uncertain. There is a worrying potential for departures this summer, with Ronald Koeman hoping to keep some of the club’s best talent. But that might not be possible.
Instead, what the Toffees may need to do is look for clever signings to supplement the young and exciting team they already have. Arsenal could be the perfect team to look towards, with a number of players not currently in the plans of Arsene Wenger.
