The Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern simply cannot wait for their disappointing season to finally reach its conclusion.
Although there’s no danger that Everton will be relegated this season, it’s fair to say it’s been an extremely uninspiring campaign for the Toffees. Sam Allardyce – the club’s third manager of the season – has struggled to win over the supporters since his arrival, and it seems probable that his unpopularity will inevitably cause him to depart the club this summer.
But Everton will also need to bring new players to the club during the summer in order to rewrite the wrongs from the current season during the next campaign and, according to reports in The Daily Telegraph, the club have already targeted Norwich City’s James Maddison as a player to pursue in the transfer window, although they face competition from a host of Premier League clubs.
Maddison (valued at £9 million by Transfermarkt) has been in fantastic form for the Canaries this season, as his record of 14 goals and 8 assists from 41 league appearances serves to illustrate. With a record that impressive from attacking midfield, it’s no surprise that Premier League clubs are queuing up to secure his signature this summer.
Considering the level of competition that currently exists, Everton will have to be creative with their offer in order to increase their chances of completing a deal, and one route they would be wise to take is a part-exchange transfer with Davy Klaassen moving in the opposite direction.
Klaassen arrived on Merseyside with plenty of expectation following his transfer from Ajax in the summer of 2017, but so far he has failed to make an impression at Goodison Park. The Dutch international has effectively been frozen out of Everton’s first-team plans for the entirety of the season as he has made only 3 starts in the Premier League all season.
However, only one season earlier Klaassen boasted an impressive record of 20 goals and 12 assists in all-competitions whilst playing for Ajax, so there’s no doubt that he possesses raw potential which is simply waiting to be unearthed.
A step down to the Championship could be exactly what Klaassen needs to adapt to his surroundings in English football and, considering he would be a like-for-like swap for Maddison, Everton would be wise to use him as a makeweight during negotiations with Norwich.
