The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern would love to see Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk come to Goodison Park this summer…
However, it appears as though those aspirations have suffered a blow – with Southampton reportedly demanding a sizeable fee for the defender. According to the Liverpool Echo, Everton are ready to launch a summer move for the defender, but the Toffees would reportedly struggle to match the apparent £55 million fee that has been slapped upon van Dijk.
Whilst Everton would be unable to reach that fee, Southampton are certainly well within their rights to demand as much as that. Van Dijk has arguably been the Premier League’s standout defender in recent years, and if an injury hadn’t put an end to his season, he would likely still be having a huge impact for the Saints now.
Powerful in the air and comfortable with the ball at his feet, our landlord doesn’t think hat Southampton will have a shortage of suitors for the defender, regardless of the fee that they demand.
The Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern are pretty disappointed, but the Chelsea fans in the pub have not been put off. The Blues need a defender this summer, with John Terry yet to sign a new contract, and many in the pub think that van Dijk would be perfect, regardless of cost.
