Everton fans will be looking for their side to start producing some consistency with their fixtures now after what has been a rather good ten days or so. Taking four points from their last two matches, including an impressive one against their arch-rivals, has left the Toffees with a fighting chance of finishing seventh, however, they will know a poor result could effectively end any hopes of achieving that position.
Following Newcastle United’s defeat to West Ham United last weekend, Marco Silva’s side may have the perfect opportunity to close the gap between themselves and the likes of the Wolverhampton Wanderers, Watford and The Hammers with a victory whilst also creating some separation between themselves and the chasing pack.
And, Everton could be in a good position to make it seven points from a possible nine on Saturday.
What’s the News?
According to the club’s official website, it would appear that Silva has one new injury concern, with Phil Jagielka joining Leighton Baines on the sidelines.
That news will mean the Toffees will have a near-fully fit squad to choose from for their trip to St. James’ Park, which could see an unchanged side from the Merseyside derby last weekend.
Everton appear to have started to build some form with their recent results and their performances have started to significantly improve and fans will feel relieved they have started to show what they can do.
With Newcastle being in-form (despite their defeat last weekend), they pose a tricky test for the Toffees although Silva’s side should have some momentum and confidence from their previous two outings to be able to build on, especially considering that Everton have a rather good record when they play at St. James’ Park, having won four of their last five visits.
Although both Jagielka and Baines have been excellent servants at Goodison Park throughout their careers, the pair have been out of favour and the club does have better options available to them now as the duo start to reach the latter stages of their respective careers.
Lucas Digne has impressed with a number of his performances following his summer arrival from Barcelona, whilst the likes of Kurt Zouma and Michael Keane have provided the club with some important contributions, making it appear that much harder for Jagielka and Baines to get back into the team.
