The Daily Express have an intriguing claim for us here in the Football Transfer Tavern as they note that Everton could well be set to face some rather stiff competition to land Wigan Athletic ace Jean Beausejour .
The 29-year-old is of course one of new Everton manager, Roberto Martinez’s former star players and has been a key man for the Latics since his arrival.
Now it seems that Everton and also Ligue 1 outfit Bordeaux are interested in taking the player on a permanent deal and allowing him to play top flight football once again.
As we all know, despite winning the FA Cup last term, Wigan succumbed to the drop and saw their manager leave to boot.
Now doing exactly what angered them so much when Manchester United and David Moyes tried to swoop for Leighton Baines and Marounae Fellaini, the Toffees are now trying to bring another of Martinez’s former star men to Goodison Park, to follow in the footsteps of Arouna Kone, Antolin Alcaraz and Joel Robles.
Given the first priority for the Latics this season is getting promoted back to the Premier league – something Dave Whelan has made sure new manager Owen Coyle is fully aware of, selling their best players will not really be on the agenda for the club and having French side Bordeaux keen on the player seems to be the last of Martinez’s worries.
The Everton manager is confident he could get the player to personally agree to join him at the Toffees; it is convincing Wigan that could be the problem.
