Everton to move for Liverpool transfer target

alderweireld.jpgEverton supporters in the Football Transfer Tavern are highly anticipating the new season with Roberto Martinez making some interesting signings after replacing Manchester United’s David Moyes as Toffees manager.

Today The Express suggest that the Goodison Park-based club are ready to beat Merseyside rivals Liverpool to highly-rated Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld after the club sent his scouts to check on the Belgium star who is valued at around £5 million and has made 24 appearances for his country.

Alderweireld has been repeatedly linked with a move to the Premier League during the past season but he has already rejected a transfer to ambitious Norwich City. The Canaries reportedly agreed a £7 million fee with the Eredivisie champions for his services but were unable to agree on personal terms and instead he remains at the Amsterdam Arena.

Liverpool have now been tipped to make a move for the 24-year-old but Martinez will hope to defeat any rival interest by submitting an official bid for the versatile Belgian international defender who only has one year left on his current contract with the Amsterdam giants.

Alderweireld’s agent, Soren Lerby, said: “It is true that Everton came forward for Alderweireld.

“Though there are other concrete directions, Toby must now look at which team he finds the most challenging.”

The centre back’s father also encouraged a bid from Everton, stating:  “Officially, we know nothing, but a nice English team is always interesting for Toby.

“There are only two possibilities. Either he signs in Amsterdam or leaves.”
