Manchester United fans in the Football Transfer Tavern are relieved to hear via the Liverpool Echo that Everton plan to sign their unwanted midfielder Tom Cleverley at the end of the season when he will be out of contract.
Toffees boss Roberto Martinez wants the 25-year-old midfielder who is currently out on loan to Aston Villa and the Everton gaffer is ready to pounce as soon as he becomes a free agent.
There has been talk that Cleverley may want to stay at Villa Park but punters in the tavern feel that if the midfielder had to choose between the to two clubs, he would opt for the Toffees rather than the struggling Villains.
Cleverley supposedly has a good relationship with Martinez after he was loaned to Wigan Athletic during the 2010/11 campaign.
The Manchester United scapegoat would have been a useful addition to Everton’s side this winter due to the injuries to Leon Osman and Steven Pienaar but Premier League rules would not have allowed him to play for the Merseyside club so soon.
Thankfully, Martinez was able to find cover for Pienaar after he signed Aaron Lennon on loan from Tottenham and apparently Osman’s injury is not as bad as first feared with the long-serving Toffees ace progressing well from a snapped tendon.
