Everton were once offered the chance to sign one of the best midfielders in the game but turned him down.
According to Spanish football expert Guillem Balague, the Toffees decided against signing Saul Niguez during his early years as a football.
The BBC Sport pundit has revealed on BBC Radio 5 Live that they had the opportunity to bring him from Atletico Madrid when he was just 18 years old, however, the Goodison Park outfit were not interested.
Now just 23, Saul looks to have become one of the best midfielders in the footballing world and has become a key man in Diego Simone’s side, as well as having become a regular in the Spanish national team.
Speaking to Radio 5 Live, Balague revealed: “Saul, certainly, finally people have realised the talent that this man has.
“This was a man that as an 18-year-old was offered to Everton and they said no. As a 20-year-old he was offered to Manchester United and Manchester United said no.
“But I think in the next couple of years we will be talking about him as one of the top, if not the top, midfielder in Europe.”
Everton could look to regret turning down a move for Saul, although it was five years ago and things may have been different.
There is no doubt that the 23-year-old is an extremely talented individual, however, he may have struggled to become the player he is now if he had made the move to the Premier League side.
Everton will not be concerned about the ‘ifs and buts’ of the chances they had to sign the £63million-rated ace, as per Transfermarkt and will be looking ahead to their Premier League match with West Ham United this Sunday.
