Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the new era at their football club following the appointment of Marco Silva as the club’s new manager at the rear end of last week.
The 40-year-old has been out of work since losing his job at Watford back in January, with the Hornets very much laying the blame at the feet of Everton for their approaches for the Portuguese after they parted with Ronald Koeman back in October. However, the Toffees now have their man after relieving Sam Allardyce of his duties last month, despite leading the club to an eighth place finish in the Premier League.
As such, there are many expectant and excited Evertonians in the Tavern at present, several of whom are hoping for shrewd additions this summer, which is why they are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking their club with a move for Newcastle United’s Jamaal Lascelles.
And while the £13.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) has recently played down speculation surrounding a possible move, the centre back may find it difficult turning down the Merseysiders if they do indeed firm up their interest.
Ultimately, Everton endured a very testing season this time round but still managed to finish eighth in the top-flight, this all despite losing 15 of their 38 Premier League matches, and mustering just three victories on the road.
As such, there is vast room for improvement at Goodison Park, which immediately makes them genuine European contenders next season given they finished just five points adrift of seventh place Burnley, who will enter the second round of Europa League qualifying later in the summer.
And with a new era beckoning at Everton under Silva, whom owner Farhad Moshiri has made no secret of wanting for some time now, the future looks extremely bright at Goodison Park, and as such the sort of place players like Lascelles would likely seek to be a part of.
Add in the uncertainty at Newcastle, and whether or not manager Rafa Benitez will get the funds to improve upon his side’s tenth place finish this time round, a move to a more stable club in Everton, who clearly do have financial power, could help Lascelles continue his rise to becoming a top-quality Premier League defender.
The Toffees were pretty hopeless at the back for much of the 2017/18 season, and with the likes of Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka in the twilight of their careers, the Newcastle centre back is likely to command regular football under Silva at the Merseyside outfit.
And turning out for Everton may even enhance his hopes of breaking into Gareth Southgate’s England squad, what with the 24-year-old somewhat surprisingly omitted during the course of this campaign despite his sterling efforts in the heart of Benitez’s backline.
But playing for a club on the up and eyeing the European spots may be what’s needed for Lascelles to move to the forefront of Southgate’s mind ahead of the coming years.
As such, while the defender has recently played down speculation over his future, he would surely struggle to turn down Everton’s advances were they to intensify their interest this summer.
