Everton supporters have been somewhat relieved in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team salvage a 1-1 draw at home with Premier League strugglers Southampton on Saturday courtesy of a last-minute leveller.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their clash with the relegation-threatened Saints off the back of victories over Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town in their preceding two league games, and thus going in search of a third straight league win for the first time since January 2017 when they hosted Mark Hughes’ side on Saturday. Yet they had to settle for a share of the spoils as Tom Davies’ 96th minute equaliser cancelled out Nathan Redmond’s opener for the visitors, a result which keeps Everton eighth in the Premier League table.
Thus, there have been many satisfied Toffees supporters in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can finish a generally frustrating campaign on a high by beating West Ham in their final match of the season on Sunday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Evertonians to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking midfielder Wayne Rooney with a move away this summer.
And with the 32-year-old possibly on his way out of Goodison Park this summer, £16.2 million-rated Toffees star Davy Klaassen (as per Transfermarkt) could well get one final chance to save his Everton career.
Ultimately, the Netherlands international has endured a horrendous time on Merseyside since his move from Ajax last summer, with the 25-year-old mustering just 15 appearances for the Toffees, only six of which coming in the Premier League.
And with no goals and just one assist to show for his efforts this term, it’s clear that the Dutchman is pretty low down Allardyce’s pecking order at Goodison Park, although his ten-minute cameo off the bench against Southampton does indicate that he is at least still in the manager’s thoughts.
And he could well remain in those thoughts and perhaps become more prominent were Rooney to leave the club this summer.
Ultimately, Klaassen was without doubt a victim of Everton’s poor recruitment last summer, with the 25-year-old one of three number tens the Toffees bought alongside Rooney and Gylfi Sigurdsson – out of the trio, it’s Klaassen who has fared the worst.
And while the latter is arguably the number one choice in that position as of now, he hasn’t always produced the goods for the Merseysiders this season, and with a knee injury bringing to an end his campaign early ahead of the World Cup, it remains to be seen how he gets on upon return from injury.
And were Rooney to leave, Klaassen would likely be the man in position to displace Sigurdsson in the starting eleven – after all, the Dutchman can’t be a bad player having netted 20 times for Ajax last season.
As such, Rooney’s possible departure this summer could well open the door for Klaassen to appear more regularly for the Toffees, and thus give him one final chance to salvage his Everton career.
