Everton supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team ease past Huddersfield Town 2-0 on Saturday to record back-to-back Premier League victories.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their meeting with the relegation-threatened Terriers off the back of a 1-0 success over in-form Newcastle United on Monday night, a result which moved them above Leicester City into eighth place in the Premier League table. And the Toffees consolidated that position on Saturday at the John Smith’s Stadium as goals from Cenk Tosun and Idrissa Gueye sealed a comfortable victory for the Merseysiders, moving them to within six points of seventh place Burnley, albeit they have a significantly inferior goal difference.
As such, there have been many satisfied Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their side can indeed maintain their decent run of form through to the end of the season, thus building key momentum ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Toffees supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Watford are leading the chase to sign West Brom striker Salomon Rondon.
Yet with the 28-year-old reportedly available for £16.5 million were West Brom to get relegated this term, Everton should seek to bolster their attacking ranks by luring the forward to Goodison Park this summer.
Ultimately, the Toffees seriously struggled for goals in the first half of the season, to the point that former manager Ronald Koeman dragged Oumar Niasse back in from the cold to lead the line.
And while January signing Tosun has been much-improved in the last few weeks after a sluggish start to life in English football, question marks still remain over his suitability over the course of a campaign – clearly, the Merseysiders need striking reinforcements this summer if they are to move to the next level next season.
And Rondon could well be that man.
The 28-year-old has bagged seven goals and laid on three assists in 34 Premier League appearances for the Baggies this season, adding to the eight he netted for the Midlands club last time round, and the nine he bagged in his first campaign in English football back in 2015/16.
And while seven goals this term is hardly a ground-breaking figure, that tally would put him behind just Niasse and Wayne Rooney in Everton’s goal-scoring charts this term to thus underline how crucial he could be for the Toffees in the years to come.
But it’s not just the goals which Everton could do with, it’s the Venezuela international’s all round capabilities as a forward, be it strength off the ball and aerial dominance in the box, that could play into Allardyce’s more direct style, and thus reap the rewards for the club next term.
And at £16.5 million if and when West From get relegated, given what strikers go for nowadays, would be a bargain for someone proven at Premier League level.
As such, while Watford reportedly lead the race for the 28-year-old, Everton must seek to strike a bargain deal for the Baggies ace this season to bolster their attacking ranks.
