Everton supporters have been pretty downbeat in the Transfer Tavern in the last couple of days after seeing their team only muster a 0-0 draw with a make-shift Liverpool side in the Merseyside derby on Saturday.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their clash with the Reds off the back of a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Premier League leaders Manchester City in their previous league outing, whom Liverpool then battered 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final in midweek. And with the return leg to come this evening, manager Jurgen Klopp made many changes to his team at Goodison Park, but the Toffees were still unable to end an eight-year wait for victory over their bitter rivals in only managing a goalless draw on Saturday.
Consequently, there have been many frustrated Everton fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team can get back to winning ways when they travel to struggling Swansea City this weekend.
Yet many of our resident Evertonians are already looking ahead to the summer and what business their side may seek to do, with several of the opinion that £18 million-rated Manchester United outcast Daley Blind (as per Transfermarkt) should resurrect his Premier League career by moving to Goodison Park.
Ultimately, the 28-year-old has struggled for minutes under Jose Mourinho this season with just five Premier League appearances to show for his efforts, alongside only ten in other competitions.
And while injury has played a part in his struggles, certainly since the turn of the year, the Netherlands international was still out of favour when fit in the first half of the season to suggest that he was in a lowly position on Mourinho’s pecking order.
And with Luke Shaw playing some minutes in recent times and Ashley Young appearing to nail down the left back spot, Blind’s prospects at Old Trafford really do not look good, and as such he could be on the lookout for a move this summer.
And Everton could be the perfect destination.
The Toffees are in need of defensive reinforcements after shipping a staggering 53 goals in their 33 Premier League games so far, the most of any team currently in the top ten of the division.
Current number one choice left back Leighton Baines is 33 now and very much entering the twilight of his career, and the same can be said of central defensive stars Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka, all three of which see their contracts expire in 2019 (as per Transfermarkt).
Significantly, Blind has shown adeptness at playing both left back and centre back during his time at United, and if one adds the fact that he moved to Old Trafford as a defensive-minded central midfielder, he would be a huge asset to Allardyce ahead of the new season, especially as the Toffees have also struggled in that department this term.
As such, it’s clear that Blind would be an invaluable member of the squad at Goodison Park, and with his time at United seemingly over, he should seek to resurrect his Premier League career by moving to Everton this summer.
