Everton supporters have been very glum in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team fall to a 1-0 defeat at Watford in the Premier League last time out, thus failing to improve upon their woeful away record.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their encounter in Hertfordshire having managed just one victory in their preceding 13 away league games, picking up a paltry eight points along the way. And their difficulties away from Goodison Park continued last time out as a Troy Deeney effort 11 minutes from the end was enough to decide a poor game and thus clinch all three points for Javi Gracia’s side, in turn moving the Hornets to within a point of ninth place Everton in the Premier League table.
Subsequently, there have been many disappointed and angry Evertonians in the Tavern this week, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can put things right when they travel to Burnley on Saturday.
And many of our resident Toffees supporters have been discussing what changes Allardyce may opt to make at Turf Moor, with many calling for Wayne Rooney to be axed in favour of winger Yannick Bolasie.
Ultimately, 32-year-old Rooney didn’t enjoy his best game at Vicarage Road last time out and was hugely ineffective in the middle of the park, failing to create a single chance in the whole 90 minutes, as well as completing just 71% of his passes.
And against a Burnley side likely to be well-drilled, well-organised, and ultimately well-structured at Turf Moor on Saturday, those number simply won’t suffice, and as such Allardyce must consider taking Rooney out of the side.
And he should replace him with winger Bolasie, as the 28-year-old possesses the sort of pace and trickery which can unsettle the Clarets backline, and ultimately reap the rewards for the Merseyside outfit.
The DR Congo international hasn’t quite hit the heights since returning from injury back in December, but against a Burnley that have conceded just 11 goals at home this season, Allardyce will need the winger to get at the defenders and try and stretch the pitch, in a bid to disrupt the shape of Dyche’s back four.
Everton have been crying out for an injection of pace down the flanks all season long, and with Theo Walcott making a decent start to life down one side, the Toffees need Bolasie to start rediscovering his form down the other – the duo would be a frightening proposition for any backline when in form.
And with Allardyce’s side targeting that second away win of the campaign, and thus seeking to move level on points with the Clarets in the race for seventh, the former England chief must seek to axe 32-year-old Rooney in favour of £18 million-rated Bolasie (as per Transfermarkt) on Saturday.
