Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are very much looking forward to the new era at their football club, what with a new manager set to be appointed in the coming days or weeks.
The Merseyside outfit relieved Sam Allardyce of his duties earlier this month, despite leading the club away from Premier League danger to the lofty heights of eighth place in the table come the season’s end. However, he did so in a way which riled several Everton fans up and down the country, with many voicing their displeasure at Allardyce’s tactics and style of play as the campaign wore on, to the point that the Toffees hierarchy acted and parted with the 64-year-old at the conclusion of the season.
As such, attentions are very much on who the club’s next manager will be, with Marco Silva reportedly the likely candidate, yet some of our resident Evertonians have also been digesting the reports linking defender Ramiro Funes Mori with a move away from Goodison Park this summer.
And alongside reports linking the Toffees with £9 million-rated Middlesbrough star Ben Gibson (as per Transfermarkt), the 25-year-old appears to be the ideal replacement for the linked-away Everton ace.
Ultimately, Funes Mori endured a tricky campaign at Goodison Park due to injury, with the 27-year-old having a knee operation during the close season 12 months ago, which would subsequently rule him out until April of this year.
Yet it’s clear from Everton’s defensive woes throughout the 2017/18 season that the Argentina international would likely command regular football at the club next time round, which is why reports linking Monterrey with a move for the defender is likely to concern some of our resident Toffees fans.
However, were they to land Gibson during the close season, it would go some way to filling the void left from Funes Mori’s likely departure, and thus provide the new manager with the ideal replacement for the Argentine centre back.
25-year-old Gibson has impressed greatly in the heart of the Boro back four in the last few years, not least in their ill-fated Premier League campaign of 2016/17 in which the Teessiders finished the season with the best defensive record in the bottom half of the division, but ultimately finished second-bottom.
Nonetheless, while Aitor Karanka’s side received little praise that term, Gibson certainly did, to the point that he was actually part of Gareth Southgate’s England squad back in March 2017, although failed to feature in their narrow win over Lithuania.
Thus, the 25-year-old is clearly a very highly-rated defender and one that has already excelled at Premier League level, and with Middlesbrough having failed in their quest to return to the top-flight this term, he is sure to attract interest as the summer progresses.
And given Everton’s own defensive worries this season, only five sides shipped more than the Toffees in the top-flight, alongside the possible departure of Funes Mori, Gibson’s signature is one they must seek during the close season.
