Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the new era at Goodison Park following the arrival of Marco Silva as the new Toffees manager last month.
The 40-year-old takes over from the sacked Sam Allardyce following the club’s decision to part with the Englishman at the end of last season, this all despite leading the Merseysiders to an eighth place finish in the Premier League. Nonetheless, the Toffees now have their man and as such will be looking ahead to the new campaign, with expectations high that Silva can lead them towards the European places once again.
Thus, there are many excited and expectant Evertonians in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports linking their club with a move for Sporting’s Gelson Martins.
And were the Toffees to indeed seal a deal for the £31.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), it would spell seriously bad news for current Everton winger Ademola Lookman.
Ultimately, the 20-year-old has been unable to build upon his early success at Goodison Park, with the England Under-20 World Cup winner adding just 23 appearances to his debut back in January 2017, in which he scored after just a few minutes in a 4-0 drubbing of Manchester City.
In fact, the former Charlton Athletic man instigated, against the will and advice of ex-boss Allardyce, a loan move to RB Leipzig back in January in a bid to command the regular football he needs to aid his development, and it’s a move which certainly worked out for the 20-year-old.
Lookman scored five goals and laid on four assists for the German club to help them to a sixth place finish in the Bundesliga, yet it still looks tricky for the 20-year-old to go back to Everton and play regularly in Silva’s side, let alone if Martins joins this summer as well.
Yannick Bolasie and Theo Walcott were both regulars down the flanks for Allardyce in the second half of last season, and while they weren’t always at their best, they are likely to be near the top of Silva’s pecking order this time round as well.
And adding Martins to that department, a supremely talented winger with a huge future ahead of him, will only serve to push Lookman even further down the pecking order, and possibly out of the club altogether.
So while reports that Martins could move to Goodison Park are likely to be well received by Everton supporters, they could spell seriously bad news for current Toffees forward Lookman and his immediate future prospects at the Merseyside outfit.
