According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Everton are eyeing up a move for midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure. The 25-year-old currently plays his football at fellow Premier League outfit Watford and has done so since leaving Rennes for Vicarage Road back in 2016, with his sterling efforts in the middle of the park throughout his time in Hertfordshire attracting interest from around the country.
And Everton boss Marco Silva, who was of course in charge of the Hornets only last season, is reportedly keen on luring the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) to Goodison Park – a deal which could prove to be Marcel Brands’ biggest Everton masterstroke to date.
Ultimately, the Dutchman took over as the club’s director of football earlier this year and oversaw what many felt was a successful transfer window at Goodison Park, what with a whole host of supremely talented players making the move to the blue half of Merseyside.
The likes of Lucas Digne, Andre Gomes, and Yerry Mina all swapped Barcelona for Everton while the Toffees got a deal done for the highly-rated Bernard – that’s not to mention the £50 million they spent on Richarlison, which is looking more and more like money well spent with every passing day.
Thus, Brands appears to have already pulled off a number of transfer masterstrokes in his short stint as the club’s director of football, but given Everton’s need for greater midfield strength, alongside just how good Doucoure has been recently, sealing a deal for the 25-year-old would represent the best of the lot.
The former France youth international has been a shining light in the Watford side ever since his move to the club back in 2016, with the 25-year-old possessing all the traits and capabilities needed to become a top-quality Premier League midfielder.
Be it off the ball in breaking up play and screening the Hornets backline, or indeed on it in launching attacks and producing key passes, as evidenced by his four assists already this season, Doucoure is exactly the sort of midfielder one would want in one’s side, not least an Everton team who have struggled for that type of midfielder in recent years.
Idrissa Gueye appears to be the number one central midfielder at Goodison Park such have been his efforts in the last few years, and while Gomes does appear to be making the other spot his own, he is only on loan until the end of the season, with a permanent deal a potential problem.
And with the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin and Tom Davies failing to convince, it’s plainly obvious that, if the Toffees are going to move forward under new boss Silva, that area of the pitch needs reinforcing – Doucoure is the man for the job.
And while Brands has already pulled off his fair share of masterstrokes following his arrival at Everton back in May, given the Toffees’ need for midfield improvements, as well as Doucoure’s brilliance in recent years, a deal for the 25-year-old would surely be the biggest masterstroke of the Brands reign so far.
