Everton supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their team get back to winning ways in the Premier League courtesy of a 1-0 success over Newcastle United on Monday night.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their meeting with the North East giants having failed to win any of their preceding three league games, with draws with Swansea City and Liverpool succeeding a 3-1 defeat at the hands of newly-crowned champions Manchester City. Yet the Toffees recorded their tenth home league victory of the campaign on Monday as Theo Walcott’s strike six minutes into the second half was enough to see off Rafa Benitez’s side, thus moving Everton up to eighth place in the Premier League table.
Subsequently, there have been many happy Toffees fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their side can indeed finish the season strongly and thus build momentum ahead of the 2018/19 campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Evertonians to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Chelsea will rebuff any offers for striker Alvaro Morata unless he wants to leave the club.
And Everton must seek to put some doubt in his mind by making an ambitious move for the £58.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), as landing him this summer would turn the Toffees into genuine top six contenders.
Ultimately, it has been somewhat of a struggle for the Spain international this season following his move from Real Madrid in the summer, although he has still managed 15 goals and six assists in all competitions for Antonio Conte’s side.
Yet that has come with several missed opportunities and even the odd starting eleven exclusion to suggest that he hasn’t quite won over the Chelsea boss, and with just one Premier League goal since the turn of the year, it’s clear that things aren’t quite happening for the 25-year-old.
However, one mustn’t forget the fantastic start he made to life in English football in the first half of the season, with Morata scoring six goals in his six Premier League appearances for the Blues, which at that stage had them sat in the top three alongside Manchester City and Manchester United.
And he appears to be the striker Everton have sincerely missed at times this season, and ultimately need if they are to move to the next level in the years to come.
Yes, Cenk Tosun has done well in recent weeks after a sluggish start to life in English football, but the Toffees seriously struggled for goals in the first half of the campaign, to the point that former boss Ronald Koeman had to call Oumar Niasse back in from the cold to lead the line.
And while Turkey international Tosun has improved greatly in recent months, there are still question marks over his capabilities over the course of a full season, and with little depth aside from the 27-year-old, the goals simply aren’t there for Allardyce’s side to mount an assault on the top six.
However, Morata’s arrival would indeed bolster that department, and with the Spaniard one of the best aerially in the penalty area, the likes of Theo Walcott and Yannick Bolasie, as well as the set piece threat of Leighton Baines, could seriously reap the rewards – as could Everton.
Thus, while Chelsea aren’t reportedly considering selling Morata, Everton must seek to ask the question, as an ambitious move for the former Real Madrid ace would turn them into top six contenders.
