Everton supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their team move up to sixth place in the Premier League table on Saturday.

Marco Silva’s men went into their meeting with struggling Cardiff City off the back of a 0-0 draw with in-form Chelsea just prior to the international break, a result which would have given them much confidence ahead of their home clash with Neil Warnock’s Bluebirds on Saturday. And while it was tough going for the Toffees, they got the three points in the end thanks to Gylfi Sigurdsson’s second half effort, thus securing a 1-0 victory for the Merseysiders to move them above Manchester United into sixth place in the division.

Thus, there have been many delighted Evertonians up and down the country in recent times, several of whom have unsurprisingly heaped praise on match-winner Sigurdsson, who netted his sixth goal of a very impressive season at Goodison Park on Saturday.

But it was far from plain sailing for Silva’s men against Warnock’s resilient Cardiff, with it needing a midfield masterclass from the excellent Andre Gomes to help the Toffees get all three points on Saturday.

The 25-year-old made the move to Everton during the summer as new boss Silva sought to improve his midfield ranks, and early indications suggest that he has pulled off quite the coup in bringing the Portugal international to Goodison Park, with the Barcelona man producing another stunning performance at the weekend.

Gomes touched the ball 76 times to underline his busy involvement in proceedings in the middle of the park, while he also finished the game with a very healthy pass completion rate of 86%, with Seamus Coleman to only fellow starter more successful (95%) than the 25-year-old.

And with a team-high four dribbles completed over the course of the 90 minutes, the Portuguese ace was hugely integral on the ball for the Toffees in getting attacks going and seeking to break down a resolute Cardiff backline, but he also did his fair share of work off the ball to turnover possession and stop Warnock’s men going forward.

The 25-year-old midfielder won five of his seven aerial duels during the match to underline his dominance in the air, only centre backs Michael Keane (eight) and Yerry Mina (seven) won more, while the fact that Gomes completed both tackles he attempted further exemplifies his brilliance in the middle of the park - two interceptions further emphasises his immense reading of the game when Everton needed it most.

It wasn’t a vintage Everton display by all means against a very tough opponent, but Silva not only has to thank Sigurdsson for coming up with what turned out to be the winner, as £13.5 million-rated Gomes (as per Transfermarkt) produced a midfield masterclass to outshine the Icelandic ace, and thus help the Toffees pick up all three points on Saturday.
