Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing the new era at their football club following the appointment of Marco Silva as the new Toffees manager last month.
The 40-year-old takes over the Merseyside outfit following their decision to part with Sam Allardyce, this despite the Englishman leading the Toffees away from the Premier League’s bottom three and to eighth place in the table last season. Nonetheless, Everton now have their man in former Watford and Hull City chief Silva, who will surely look to stamp his authority on the squad at Goodison Park by making some additions this summer.
And one man who has recently been linked with a move to the club is Sporting winger Gelson Martins, what with the 23-year-old reportedly having sought to terminate his contract at the Portuguese giants.
And were the £31.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) to indeed make the move to Everton, it would certainly give current Toffees winger Theo Walcott something to think about.
Ultimately, Portugal international Martins has enjoyed a wonderful season at Sporting in netting 13 goals and laying on 13 assists for the Primeira Liga club, eight goals and nine assists of which coming in their run to third place in the Portuguese top-flight.
And with the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Tottenham also thought to be keen on the winger, it’s clear exactly how highly rated he is by many around the continent, and thus how big a future he could have in the game.
As such, his arrival would certainly give England international Walcott something to think about at Goodison Park, as although the 29-year-old made a fine start to life at Everton, things somewhat tailed off as the season wore on.
The former Arsenal man left the Emirates Stadium in January to join the Toffees, and bagged twice in just his second appearance for the club in their 2-1 success over Leicester City back on January 31.
However, the winger then added just one more goal in his subsequent 12 appearances for the Merseysiders, and with just a handful of assists as well, it’s clear that Everton and new boss Silva will be expecting and will indeed need more from Walcott next season.
And Martins’ arrival may give the 29-year-old the sort of competition needed to really get the best out of his talent, talent which we saw sparingly during his time at Arsenal, as failure to produce the goods would see Martins regularly turn out ahead of him in the side given how good the Portugal international is.
Ultimately, Walcott made a decent start to life at Everton but will be expected to improve again this term, and Martins’ possible arrival would certainly give him something to think about heading into the 2018/19 campaign.
