Everton supporters have been in fine voice in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side get back to winning ways in the Premier League courtesy of a 1-0 success over in-form Newcastle United on Monday night.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their meeting with the North East giants off the back of successive draws with Swansea City and Liverpool, and with just two victories in their preceding seven league matches. Yet the Toffees once again benefited from home comforts on Monday as Theo Walcott’s strike six minutes into the second half secured a tenth league win of the campaign at Goodison Park, a result which moved them above Leicester City into eighth place in the Premier League table.
Subsequently, there have been many satisfied Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their team can finish the season strongly to set them up for an assault on the top six sides next season.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Toffees supporters to discuss, not least recent reports suggesting that Arsenal could seek to get rid of midfielder Granit Xhaka this summer.
And Everton should look to make an audacious move for the linked-away £31.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt), as his arrival could well solve their evident midfield woes.
Ultimately, the 2017/18 season has been an underwhelming one for Toffees fans, what with their club spending in excess of £100 million during the summer in a bid to challenge the top six, only to find themselves in a relegation battle back in November.
Yes, they have comfortably pulled clear of the drop under Allardyce, but it’s clear that significant reinforcements are needed to move the team to the next level next season, most notably in the central midfield ranks.
Idrissa Gueye is without doubt the best midfielder at the club, as evidenced by his recurrent impressive displays in the middle of the park, yet the position alongside the Senegal international in the two in front of the back four hasn’t really been nailed down by anybody.
Morgan Schneiderlin was much better against Newcastle on Monday but has thrown his future into doubt by admitting he’d love to play for Marseille one day, while the likes of Tom Davies and Wayne Rooney haven’t overly convinced in that role, with both better further forward.
Thus, Everton are crying out for the perfect partner for Gueye in the heart of their midfield, and Xhaka could be that man.
Yes, the Switzerland international hasn’t taken the world by storm since his move to the Emirates Stadium, but it’s clear that the 25-year-old has bags of talent and potential to be a quality midfield player.
Significantly, there have been question marks regarding his off the ball ability, but alongside the more industrious, tough-tackling Gueye, it’s not something he’ll be called upon to do regularly – instead, he can control the midfield and use his passing range to set up attacks for the front men.
While Gueye maybe isn’t as accomplished on the ball, Xhaka certainly is, and while the latter isn’t quite as solid off the ball or in the tackle, Gueye certainly is – it could be the perfect midfield combination.
And with Arsenal reportedly ready to let the Swiss star leave this summer, Everton should seek to make an audacious move for the 25-year-old in a bid to solve their midfield conundrum.
