According to a report from The London Evening Standard, defender Gary Cahill could well be set for a move away this summer. The 32-year-old has played a big part in helping Chelsea win two Premier League titles during his six-year spell at Stamford Bridge, although the England international struggled for regular football last season in starting just 24 times in the Premier League en route to the Blues’ fifth place finish.
And with the West London outfit reportedly hopeful of a big-money deal to bring Daniele Rugani to the club, Cahill is reportedly ready to leave Chelsea, which should prompt Marco Silva’s Everton to make a move for the £13.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, the Toffees endured an underwhelming campaign last time round having spent in excess of £100 million last summer, only to fall a place to eighth come the end of the season.
And much of their problems were defensively given the Merseysiders shipped 58 goals in their 38 Premier League matches, which was more than any side that finished above them in the table, and indeed two more than the relegated duo of Swansea City and West Brom.
Thus, it’s pretty clear what area of the squad new boss Silva simply has to bolster this summer, and with the likes of Ashley Williams, Phil Jagielka, and even Michael Keane struggling last term, centre back reinforcements are certainly needed – Cahill’s arrival would go some way to strengthening that department.
Yes, the Englishman is 32 and perhaps past his absolute best, but one mustn’t forget that the defender played a vital role in helping Antonio Conte’s Chelsea win the Premier League title little over 12 months ago, with Cahill forming a formidable partnership in a back three alongside Cesar Azpilicueta and David Luiz.
And having also lifted the Champions League, Europa League, and the FA Cup, alongside another league title back in 2015, the 32-year-old would bring a wealth of trophy-winning experience to an Everton side very much lacking in that department, while his tally of 61 caps for England can only serve to help guide the rest of the squad through the coming season.
Significantly though, Cahill remains a hugely adept centre back at Premier League level and one many teams in the country would want in their side, as the defender is excellent aerially and indeed in the tackle, while he has improved greatly with the ball at his feet in recent times to become an all round modern-day centre back.
And with Cahill seemingly set to leave Chelsea this summer, alongside the fact that he’s better than the other options at Silva’s disposal, Everton should seek to take advantage of a possible Blues deal for Rugani by moving for the Englishman this summer.
