Everton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the remainder of the summer transfer window following the news that Marco Silva has been appointed the club’s new manager.
The former Hull City and Watford chief has been out of work since losing his job at the latter back in January, a departure the Hornets blamed on Everton’s approaches for the 40-year-old following their decision to part with Ronald Koeman a few months earlier. Sam Allardyce then took over at Goodison Park and led them to an eighth place finish in the Premier League, although he has since been relieved of his duties, with it clear that he was not the man to take the club forward in the coming years.
As such, it’s Silva who has taken over at Everton, and one man who could be on his way to Goodison Park to join him this summer is Aston Villa attacker Jack Grealish, with recent reports suggesting that the Villans may have to sell during the close season following their failure to win promotion.
And were the Toffees to indeed get a deal done for the £4.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt), Davy Klaassen would surely have no future at the Merseyside outfit.
Ultimately, it has been a struggle for the Netherlands international ever since he made the move from Ajax 12 months ago, with the 25-year-old mustering just 16 senior appearances for Everton this season, just ten of which were starts.
And with no goals and just one assist in that time, it wasn’t a surprise to see the Dutchman fall down the pecking order under both Koeman and indeed Allardyce, with the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Wayne Rooney performing better in that more advanced central midfield role.
Yes, there’s no doubt that Klaassen was the victim of woeful Everton recruitment last summer, given they signed three number tens, but when he has taken to the pitch for the Toffees, he simply hasn’t produced the goods, thus plunging his future into doubt.
And were the younger Grealish, another more attack-minded midfielder, to make the move to Goodison Park this summer, it would surely spell the end for the 25-year-old at the Premier League club.
22-year-old Grealish has enjoyed one of his best seasons to date in the Championship with Villa, with the former England Under-21 international showing a level of maturity to begin to get the best out of his undoubted potential.
Three goals and six assists is a solid return for the attacker in the second tier, but with bags of potential, it’s just a matter of time before he starts producing the goods in the top-flight – Everton could give him that chance.
And with Sigurdsson improving as the campaign went on, he is likely to battle the Iceland international for the starting berth next time round, leaving Klaassen very much out of favour once again heading into the new season.
Even if Rooney were to leave for DC United, Grealish would surely usurp Klaassen in the number ten pecking order, an arrival which would all but end the Dutchman’s testing time at Goodison Park.
