Everton fans must feel like it has been a lifetime since they had a prolific striker gracing the turf at Goodison Park!
Ever since Romelu Lukaku was sold to Manchester United, the Toffees have struggled to replace him and have had a number of players who have flopped spectacularly and have left some of the fans in the Glwadys Street End with their hands over their faces, scared to see what they might do next.
Ronald Koeman, Sam Allardyce and Marco Silva have all tried to solve the issue with their own additions, however, none of them have really paid off – just look at the likes of Sandro Ramirez and Cenk Tosun and how well that’s gone.
In 2017, it seems Everton tried to address the issue, however, it looks as though the fact that they did not sign their rumoured target may have actually gone in their favour.
According to Sport Bild (via NBC Sports), the Toffees were just one of a number of Premier League sides thought to be interested in signing Bobby Wood.
A Hawaii-born America international, the forward was playing his football for Bundesliga outfit Hamburg at the time (and is still contracted to them for the time being… we will get back to that later) and was believed to be an individual that would be able to provide the Merseyside outfit with the required attacking threat.
How wrong they were and how fortunate they were to dodge this bullet!
Wood has struggled to build on his early promise with the German outfit, having netted just three times that season following the interest in him; just a third of his total from the previous campaign.
And, things have not got any better for the forward this year either. Out on loan with Hannover 96, the 26-year-old has managed to match the same tally as last season in 20 appearances in the top-flight, as well as struggling with a knee problem since March (Transfermarkt).
The German outfit have the option to sign him on a permanent basis and whilst that remains to be seen, Everton must be pretty pleased they did not act on their interest on him; even if they are stuck with Tosun and co.
