Our Everton fans here in the Transfer Tavern are certainly eager to see their side continue progressing in the manner they have under Ronald Koeman this season.
For sure, the Toffees are playing an exciting brand of football that is infused with top young talent and they’ll be looking for that to kick on next season when they take on Europe.
The next step in the summer, then, is to add to that hungry looking culture which is why there can be no room for romanticism and, in that sense, Wayne Rooney.
Indeed, the likes of The Liverpool Echo has referred to the Manchester United star as a target for the Blues in a deal that would see the striker’s career come full circle.
It’s a nice sounding story for sure, then, but is it really something the men from Goodison Park should be looking to make a priority?
The whole reason that Rooney is out of the Manchester United side these days is because he no longer is the young, tenacious player that covers every blade of grass with the bit between his teeth.
Indeed, his legs look to have given up on him and at a time where Everton are in need of those extra young and determined players to make the next step – going back for Rooney seems just that – a move backwards.
Rooney, rightly, will always be an icon in English football but the game is becoming less and less about sentiment and Everton cannot afford to fall into that trap – especially at this point in their evolution.
