It’s been a slow start to the season for Everton, so far failing to live up to expectations after a busy summer, but things could be starting to turn around.
The Toffees recorded their first win since early September last weekend after completing a dominant display with a 2-0 win over West Ham United at Goodison Park.
Bernard and Gylfi Sigurdsson’s strikes set Marco Silva’s men on their way to break a four-game losing streak and ease the pressure on Silva’s shoulders following a hard-fought victory.
So much so, that Premier League legend Alan Shearer marked Everton out with a few picks for his team of the week.
There were many contenders; Andre Gomes, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Theo Walcott – but one player who stood apart in particular for Shearer was colossal defender Yerry Mina for his gargantuan display.
The Colombian was at the very heart of Everton’s solidity at the weekend, helping to tame the likes of Felipe Anderson, Manuel Lanzini and Sebastien Haller before coming off due to a tactical change. Indeed, as per WhoScored, no one made more interceptions than the former Barcelona ace, or had more shots on target than him.
Shearer recognised that, highlighting the centre-back as the Toffees key man in keeping the Hammers at bay.
“This was a powerful display by the Everton defender,” explained the pundit outlining his team of the week on the Premier League’s official website.
“They needed a leader and he fitted the bill. He was dominant at the back and didn’t give Sebastien Haller a sniff for West Ham United.”
Going on to praise other members of the Everton team, Shearer also had kind words to say about Gomes’ performance in midfield – as the engine who wouldn’t give the visitors any time to settle.
“Everton barely gave the West Ham midfield a look-in and a big part of that was down to Gomes.
“He ran the centre of the park with his touch, technique and energy.”
Indeed, the positive displays from many individuals could be a good sign of Everton’s potential progress in the coming months, possibly proving they have what it takes to challenge for a top-six place.
