According to French reports, Everton are in the race to sign Dutch defender Donny van de Beek, and Alex Bruce is backing the decision.
According to Le 10 Sport (via Football Insider), Everton are hoping to secure the signature of Ajax’s star midfielder, at the personal request of Carlo Ancelotti.
Speaking to Football Insider, former Premier League defender Bruce has praised van de Beek’s ability and has admitted Everton would be signing ‘one hell of a player’ if they can win the race to get him through the door. However, the Blues will face competition from Real Madrid and Newcastle, who are also reportedly interested in the 23-year-old’s services.
“He’s got bags of energy up and down the pitch,” Bruce said. “By getting the likes of van de Beek, if they can get players of that calibre, the only way is up for Everton. They will definitely improve the team.”
If the Merseyside outfit can coax van de Beek away from his home country, they would be acquiring a very strong asset for the current set-up. Everton’s midfield has been extremely lacking this season, with all recognised senior midfielders mustering up just four goals and three assists in the league between them (via Transfermarkt).
The injection of a young playmaker like van de Beek would seriously increase the chemistry in midfield and cook up some better chances from the middle of the park. The Dutchman has 10 goals and 11 assists across all competitions this campaign and has played almost equally between the central and attacking midfield role (via Transfermarkt).
Van de Beek’s versatility and keen eye for creativity will provide more chances for star strikers Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison to get on the end of. No price tag for the midfielder has been set but he is reportedly worth £39.6million (via Transfermarkt).
