Everton netted twice in the last three minutes to secure victory against Crystal Palace at the weekend.
The Toffees looked destined to leave with just a point against the Eagles with both sides failing to carve out clear-cut chances. The drab encounter was in desperate need of life, and Marco Silva rung the changes after the interval. The Portuguese was rewarded with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun both scoring after leaving the bench to snatch all three points; it was the first time that all three substitutes contributed to goals since August 2017.
Goals for Calvert-Lewin and Tosun will be massive confidence boosters with Everton’s forwards struggling to find the back of the net consistently. Despite their impact from the bench, Silva would be wise to target a new attacker in the January window. If Everton are to secure a European place, a regular goalscorer is needed.
One man he could target is Benfica forward, Luka Jovic, who is currently on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt. Valued at £18m by Transfermarkt, the Serbian forward has been scoring for fun in the Bundesliga and Benfica will definitely regret shipping him out on a temporary basis. Jovic scored five goals at the weekend taking his tally for the season to seven and became the youngest player in Bundesliga history ever to score five goals in one game.
Frankfurt have the option to make his stay in Germany permanent, but Jovic won’t be short of offers if his form continues. A powerful forward with expert finishing ability, his arrival at Goodison Park could be a welcome boost in the New Year. At just 20-years-old, Jovic is still improving and developing.
The Toffees need to keep a close eye on his performances as the window approaches.
