Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is said to be interested in bringing Juventus midfielder Emre Can to Goodison Park, with reports suggesting that the German 26-year-old is ‘keen’ to join the Toffees.
Can has played a bit-part role for the Italian giants so far this season, with just two starts for Maurizio Sarri’s side – and Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness) has reported that negotiations are due to begin soon.
Having played for Everton’s local rivals Liverpool, Can would be making a switch to the other half of Merseyside if Ancelotti manages to get his man.
The German midfielder has not been part of Sarri’s plans upon the Italian’s arrival in Turin, with Can being left out of their Champions League squad and appearing inconsistently in Serie A this term.
Can was said to be ‘very angry’ following his European omission and while he had pledged his commitment to Juventus soon after, it seems that has not been rewarded with sufficient game time.
Meanwhile, Everton have gaps in midfield, with Andre Gomes a long-term absentee, while Morgan Schneiderlin has remained the club’s main defensive midfielder since summer signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin’s untimely injury layoff.
For Emre Can to depart Juventus wouldn’t perhaps be a huge surprise – particularly when considering that former teammate Mario Mandzukic has already left after being cast aside in similar circumstances.
The notion that he is keen to join suggests he has shown a total disregard for his Liverpool past – which may indicate that his priority is to get back to first-team football at any cost.
That could be a positive sign for Everton who could beef up their midfield options with a Can signing, though given a switch appears to be at a preliminary stage, it may be wise to take the reports with a pinch of salt for the time being.
