Everton’s latest transfer links reportedly connect them with AC Milan’s 21-year-old goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport via Marca, the Merseyside outfit are eyeing up the Italian in hopes to clinch his services this summer. With the club having convinced Carlo Ancelotti to join (the Italian cited the club’s ambition as a reason to join) perhaps the idea of landing such a talent is a touch more realistic than it might have been before.
Reports from Italy have claimed that Donnarumma isn’t expected to sign a new deal with Milan and could be set to leave the club in the summer. Everton are currently in the race for the Italian alongside Paris Saint Germain who are also interested and, interestingly, the price tag for the young shot-shopper is just €20-25million (£18-£22.5m) despite being worth £49.5million (via Transfermarkt).
With Jordan Pickford’s recent costly blunders, there’s an argument to suggest the Toffees could benefit from signing a new goalkeeper this summer.
Pickford joined Everton from Sunderland in 2017 for £25million, becoming the most expensive British goalkeeper (via BBC Sport). However, his performances between the sticks as of late have been beyond disappointing. In his last five matches, he has made three errors that have led to a goal and averaged a rating of just 6.3 out of 10 (via Sofascore).
In comparison to Donnarumma’s average 3.1 saves per game, Pickford makes just 2.6 and concedes 1.6 goals p/90 compared to the Italian’s 1.3 (also Sofascore).
This season, Donnarumma’s successful pass percentage (70.5%) is much higher than Pickford’s (57.5%). The Italian has also averaged more clearances (1.5) than Everton’s first choice ‘keeper (0.6) per match (via WhoScored).
With Ancelotti at the hilt, the Blues should be looking to kit out the squad and push for the top six next season. Everton are already rumoured to be linked with 21-year-old winger Cengiz Ünder and fans are eager to recall defender Jonjoe Kenny from his loan as well.
Ancelotti’s side is currently 12th in the Premier League table, but just six points behind sixth-placed Wolves. So, the gap isn’t large when it comes to challenging the top teams in the country, making a ruthless upgrade on Pickford potentially worth it.
What do you think, Blues? Should Everton be looking at replacing Pickford and signing Donnarumma this window?
