The Everton fans who are gathered at the bar in The Transfer Tavern this evening are getting really rather excited over the prospect of this Euro 2016 midfielder joining their ranks.
The Daily Mirror is reporting that the Premier League side are close to signing Belgian international, Axel Witsel for £28.5 million from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg.
The midfielder is keen to leave Russia this summer and has impressed a host of European club’s with his performances for his country whilst at EURO 2016.
But Everton are confident they have beaten of competition from the likes of Napoli and Stoke City to land the 27-year-old and bring him to Goodison Park.
Speaking about concrete interest in Witsel on Sunday his father told the Daily Mirror: “It’s true I met with (Napoli sporting director) Cristiano Giuntoli in Brussels. It was a positive discussion.
“Everton’s interest is concrete, like Napoli’s, so the negotiation is ongoing. To see if the marriage happens we have to see the conditions and understand what is the best destination for the player.”
A transfer to Merseyside would end a four year spell in Russia for Witsel, who has made over 150 appearances for Zenit, scoring on 21 occasions.
