Former Premier League footballer Danny Mills has backed the club to keep hold of left-back Lucas Digne, despite reported interest from Manchester City and Chelsea.
The Gwladys Street faithful have watched the 26-year-old since his arrival at Goodison Park from Barcelona for £18m in 2018, which has attracted interest from some of the Premier League’s top club, as per 90min. Speaking to Football Insider, Mills said that he is confident that the Merseyside club can keep one of their most prized assets, with the help of ambitious owner Farhad Moshiri and the management team that he has recently assembled since the sacking of Marco Silva in December.
“Lucas Digne will have huge respect for Carlo Ancelotti,” the ex-England international said. “He is a fabulous player with great ability. It depends on whether this fifth place is opening up for the Champions League. Is he going to want to go to Manchester City if they are not going to be in the Champions League?
“Is he happy at Everton? It looks like he is. Everton have money and they are a very good club, being run very well. The owner, the sporting director, the manager – there is a long term plan and with a new stadium in the not so distant future Everton have every chance of fighting off those big clubs.”
With the reigning champions banned from UEFA competitions for the next two years due to serious Financial Fair Play breaches, this may aid Everton’s cause in keeping Digne on Merseyside. It is easy to see why he has attracted so much interest from the best sides. With nine assists and four goals in 60 appearances for the club, he has illustrated versatility with his attacking prowess and defensive capabilities. He has averaged 2.2 tackles, 2.3 clearances and 1.2 interceptions in 25 league starts during the current campaign, as per Whoscored.
Mills is right as the Blues are currently in a good position. The appointment of Carlo Ancelotti, the plans for the new stadium at the Bramley-Moore Dock and the vision of the owners provides a platform for the club to keep hold of their star acquisitions, and Digne is certainly one of them.
