According to Spanish reports, Everton are in talks with Barcelona to strike a deal for 20-year-old centre-back Jean-Clair Todibo.
The youngster, who is currently on loan with Schalke, is reportedly one of Carlo Ancelotti’s targets for the summer, according to SPORT (via Football Insider). Darren Bent has raved about the idea of the Italian bringing in talent like Todibo, praising him for throwing ‘his clout about’.
Speaking to Football Insider, Bent has spoken highly of Everton wanting to open the chequebook and bring in some talented players under new management.
“It’s nice for Ancelotti to throw his clout about and go: ‘Well hold on, Everton is a massive football club, I’m a world-class manager, got good players here, fantastic fanbase and this is a place players will want to go and play,'” the ex-striker said. “We know Everton have got deep pockets so it’s nice to see them pushing and having a right go.”
Todibo will reportedly cost Everton an initial £17.7 million and the club is already in talks over acquiring the Frenchman’s services. His loan club Schalke are thought to be interested in making his stay permanent, but cannot afford the €25m (£21.7m) purchase clause in place. Todibo has played ten matches this season across all competitions and last campaign he played 12 for Barcelona, assisting a goal as well as scoring one himself (via Transfermarkt).
The addition of the youngster will certainly make a statement and help strengthen Everton’s ranks. The Blues currently have just three recognised centre-backs in their senior squad, so a protege will benefit both Todibo and those already at the club. Having an option on the bench for rotation as well as giving a 20-year-old the chance to accelerate his career in the Premier League is a win-win for both parties involved.
