Speaking to Football Insider regarding the return of Everton midfielder Andre Gomes in their 3-2 defeat away at Arsenal last weekend, former England international striker Darren Bent has been full of praise for the Toffees hero following his ‘good‘ comeback from injury.
Back in November, Gomes was taken off following a shocking challenge from Tottenham winger Heung-min Son on the near touchline, with the Portuguese ace suffering a horrific ankle break during the Toffees’ eventual 1-1 draw at home to the North London outfit. Four months later, Gomes’ return has come against fellow North Londoners Arsenal – where he played 30 minutes of their 3-2 loss at the Emirates Stadium. Despite this, ex-Spurs striker Bent has been full of praise for the 26-year-old following his cameo – going on to say that he is exactly ‘what they’ve been missing’.
“I was so happy to see Gomes, he was so good. In the second half you could see where they miss him,” Bent explained to Football Insider.
“He’s so comfortable in possession, and his range of passing, left and right foot, he impressed me. I thought: ‘Wow, that’s what they’ve been missing.’
“It’s testament to himself to get himself back so quickly. That was a nasty one, I thought he could have been out for ages. He played well.”
Indeed, judging by the stats, it appears Everton did miss Gomes whilst he was cast to the sidelines – with stand-in youngster Tom Davies unable to replicate the Portugal midfielder’s superior pass accuracy (84.1%) and rate of key passes in the final third (0.7), as per WhoScored.com. The 26-year-old has also completed 90% of his passes from inside his own half (SofaScore). Now, with Gomes back in action and steadily returning to 100% match fitness, Everton could benefit greatly from his presence in their chase for European football.
