Everton eye alternatives as they fear prime-target will reject move

Everton fans in the Transfer Tavern have their head in their hands, after an array of reports suggested it’s unlikely the Toffees will land a prime target this summer.

Ronald Koeman’s side are extremely interested in bringing England international Michael Keane to Goodison Park from Burnley but the face an array of competition in the market, with the emergence of Manchester United in the chase handing the Merseyside outfit a huge blow.

Everton fear that Keane could eye a return to Old Trafford, following his exit in 2015, and The Liverpool Echo states the Toffees have started to explore alternative options.

Ronald Koeman’s short-list include other Premier League defenders, including Hull City’s Harry Maguire and Southampton’s Virgil Van Dijk, although a move for the latter seems unlikely given the Saints high demands.

Dutch boss Koeman is seeking at least two central defenders this summer, The Echo adds, whilst the club is also eyeing recruits at right-back due to the extended absence of Seamus Coleman.

Our landlord believes the most likely defensive signing for Everton this summer is Maguire, who wouldn’t quite have the same impact on the side that Keane or Van Dijk would provide.
