According to a previous report from the Daily Mirror, Everton were targeting Juventus defender Merih Demiral as a potential January swoop as Carlo Ancelotti looked to bolster his backline – but since the player’s reported anterior cruciate ligament injury, the club may have ceased their interest for the time being.
Per Football Italia, Demiral has suffered a season-ending injury that will see him out of action until the summer and potentially off the radar of Premier League clubs for the time being – dealing a heavy blow to Ancelotti’s side who were reportedly in the hunt.
Compared to Everton’s current centre-back pair Michael Keane and Mason Holgate, Demiral offers an entirely different playing style defensively. While the English duo make more interceptions and clearances in the league, as per WhoScored.com, the Juve man eclipses their pass success rate with an impressive 91.5% average – potentially highlighting Ancelotti’s desire to bring in a ball-playing centre half.
However, with Demiral’s ACL injury, the Toffees have been forced to halt the pursuit for now – prompting these Everton fans to curse their luck. Here’s what they had to say on Twitter.
