Loads of Everton supporters have been replying to an official club tweet looking to vent their frustration, after it was confirmed that summer signing Jean-Philippe Gbamin has been ruled out for at least eight weeks with a thigh injury.
Gbamin had featured in Everton’s two opening Premier League fixtures following a £25million (BBC) move from FSV Mainz 05 in August after Idrissa Gana Gueye’s £30million (BBC) departure for Paris Saint-Germain, but missed Friday’s 2-0 loss to Aston Villa after sustaining a significant injury in training.
The Ivory Coast international has since undergone further tests to determine the seriousness of the blow, which revealed the 23-year-old had suffered a tendon injury to his right quadriceps muscle and faces at least eight weeks on the sidelines.
Everton are in communication with leading experts from around Europe as they look to ensure the optimal outcome is achieved from Gbamin’s rehabilitation, with further investigations scheduled for later in the week to ascertain the full timescale for his recovery.
Eight weeks out of action would be Gbamin’s longest absence since missing 13 games for RC Lens between July 20 and October 26, 2015, when he suffered a knock (TransferMarkt).
Gbamin was able to boast a moderately clean bill of health throughout his time in the Bundesliga with Mainz, missing sporadic fixtures with ankle, thigh and hamstring gripes that never amounted to more than three games away from the field.
The 5-cap star’s absence will be a blow to Marco Silva as he looks to improve results on the back of tasting defeat at Villa Park, with Andre Gomes, Morgan Schneiderlin, Fabian Delph and Tom Davies his senior central midfield options ahead of his side’s Carabao Cup trip to Lincoln City and Premier League encounter with Wolves.
Fans have been venting their frustration at losing Gbamin for at least eight weeks on social media after the club announced the news.
