Everton: Fans react to Davies’ England U21s call-up

A selection of Everton supporters have been replying to a post on the official Blues Twitter feed, after the Goodison Park natives shared that Tom Davies had been selected for Aidy Boothroyd’s England U21s.

The Young Lions travel to Turkey on September 6 before hosting Kosovo at the KCOM Stadium in Hull three days later, as they look to begin their qualifying campaign for Euro 2021 with early wins.

Davies is one of only four players to have been carried over from Boothroyd’s last Under 21 squad, and the only Everton man in the squad, with Wolves’ Morgan Gibbs-White and Arsenal’s Reiss Nelson joining the Toffees product in being eligible for selection again.

Liverpool-born Davies already boasts twelve caps at the U21 international level having made his debut in a European U21 qualifier against Latvia in 2017 (TransferMarkt), but missed out on a spot at Euro 2019 as a shoulder injury (Liverpool Echo) meant he could not travel to the tournament in Italy and San Marino.

The blow left Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jonjoe Kenny and Kieran Dowell as Everton’s representatives for England at the tournament, but neither of the trio are now a part of Boothroyd’s plans.

Some of the Blues supporters reacting to Davies’ call-up have shared their surprise in his inclusion, as the 21-year-old has rarely featured for Everton this season, with one eleven-minute cameo his only outing thus far (TransferMarkt).

Davies was not awarded a range of appearances toward the tail end of Marco Silva’s first season in charge of the Goodison Park natives, either, with the Portuguese only offering the central midfielder three sub-five minute jaunts between February 10 and the end of the term.

Here’s a selection of the reactions shared by Everton supporters to Davies’ latest England U21 call-up…
