A selection of Everton supporters have been reacting on social media, after it was shared that Joao Pedro Sousa has led FC Famalicao to the top of the Liga NOS table having left Goodison Park in the summer.
Sousa had been Marco Silva’s right-hand man on Merseyside after forming part of the same coaching set-up throughout the Blues boss’ career in the hot seat, with spells together at Sporting Lisbon, Olympiacos, Hull City and Watford.
The pair even played together at Trofense during the late 1990s, but Sousa was offered the chance to switch the number two role for the manager’s position at another of his former sides in the summer, following a spell with Famalicao as assistant manager in 2009/10.
Famalicao appointed Sousa as their new head coach in June as they looked to establish their presence in the Primeira Liga (The Telegraph), having been promoted to the Liga NOS after a 25-year absence, in which they fell to the fifth-tier of Portuguese football before mounting a return to the top in 2008 following their relegation to the Regional Honour League.
The Famalicenses have started life under Sousa remarkably well, with Silva’s former number two leading the Vila Nova outfit to the top spot after four games.
Famalicao have won three and drawn once in those ties, including shutting-out Santa Clara and Rio Ave to edge Benfica and FC Porto by a point. Sousa’s men now travel to bottom of the table Pacos Ferreira on September 15.
The Estadio Municipal 22 de Junho natives best finish in the Portuguese top-flight was a 14th place result achieved in 1991/92 and again in ’92/93.
Here’s how these Everton fans reacted to Sousa’s start to life as a head coach…
