Loads of Everton fans have torn into Michael Keane for his performance against Brighton & Hove Albion, even with some forgiving the England defender for conceding a penalty following VAR review.
Keane retained his place in Marco Silva’s starting line-up for the tenth Premier League game in a row (WhoScored), as the Portuguese head coach kept his faith in the men who beat West Ham United last week, barring an enforced change with Mason Holgate stepping in for an injured Yerry Mina (Sky Sports).
Only goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, left-back Lucas Digne and forward Richarlison have also started in each of Everton’s top-flight encounters thus far, but only the Three Lions shot-stopper has likewise seen out all fixtures played with Keane.
Some Toffees fans would seemingly be happy to see that Keane’s run in the opening squad comes to its end, though, as supporters have slammed the 26-year-old for a ‘clumsy’ and ‘terrible’ performance against Brighton, that made the £30million (BBC) defender look like a ‘Championship-level player’ at best.
Keane had made a crucial interception to stop Brighton having a chance to take the lead when Bernard was down, but was later caught out when the Seagulls broke on the counter searching for a winning goal having been awarded a penalty to pull level (Liverpool Echo).
The decision by referee Andy Madley to point to the spot after Video Assistant Referee Lee Mason investigated the incident has been widely questioned, as the contact Keane was adjudged to have made with Aaron Connolly was not clear and obvious in the eyes of the many (Guardian).
Even still, Everton fans were not impressed by Keane’s performance, which featured no successful tackles, no aerial duels beyond the fourth-minute and an 83% pass success rate, according to data collected by WhoScored.

Would struggle to think of a worse centre half in my time watching Everton than Keane #EFC

Imo it wasn’t a penalty. That asides I thought Gomes, Walcott and Keane were terrible. Away record is so poor I don’t reckon Silva survives #Efc
