Many Everton supporters have been left unimpressed by an official club tweet, which suggested Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal against Manchester City could have counted for more ‘on another day’.
The Sheffield-born striker’s second league goal of the campaign (WhoScored) provided Marco Silva’s Goodison Park natives with an equaliser in the 33rd-minute on Saturday, when he headed home on the goal line a dinked effort by Seamus Coleman which was destined to find the Citizen’s net.
His goal ruled out Gabriel Jesus’ earlier opener but failed to prevent Everton from going on to lose 3-1, as second-half efforts by Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling ensured the visitors returned to the Etihad Stadium with the spoils.
Everton’s official Twitter account has tried to take the positives from the defeat, though, by suggesting Marco Silva’s men need to build on the performance shown against the reigning Premier League title-holders, with Calvert-Lewin’s goal also his fourth in three games following a sole effort at AFC Bournemouth and a brace in the Carabao Cup at Sheffield Wednesday.
Toffees supporters failed to see the same positives with many pointing to Calvert-Lewin’s later spurned chances, when he failed to beat Ederson in the 76th-minute when the Brazilian went to ground early and shanking a 79th-minute effort wide from yards out.
The couple of misses meant the 22-year-old ended his 90-minute appearance with one shot on target from three efforts (WhoScored), as well as penning a 46% pass accuracy rating after misplacing seven of 13 balls to teammates – no player for either side misplaced a higher percentage.
So when the official Everton Twitter account suggested his goal could have counted for more, these were some of the reactions shared…
