Jonjoe Kenny is ‘99% likely’ to return to Goodison Park this summer upon the expiry of his loan deal with Schalke.
According to Sport Witness, the defender will be heading back to England despite being keen on extending his stay with the Bundesliga outfit.
The £8.55m-valued ace joined David Wagner’s side on loan last year in search of regular minutes on the pitch. Since his arrival, he has cemented himself in Schalke’s starting lineup and has contributed to six clean sheets, as well as assisting three goals and scoring one for himself (via Transfermarkt).
Should Jonjoe Kenny be made a starter for Everton next season?
Both parties would like to see the 23-year-old stay with the club for longer, but his current loan deal does not have an extension clause or an option to buy. Schalke have also reportedly stated that the club’s finances ‘aren’t really good at the moment’, hinting that perhaps even though they’d like to see Kenny extend his stay, they don’t have the funds to make it happen (per Sky Sports Germany via Sport Witness).
Everton have another dilemma on their hands in the form of Djibril Sidibe. The Frenchman is currently on loan from Monaco and is due to head back to his home country this summer unless the Blues opt to make his stay permanent.
If Sidibe has impressed and has earned a move to Goodison, Kenny may remain behind him and Seamus Coleman in the pecking order. After having a taste of being an untouchable starter in a top tier team, the 23-year-old won’t want to go back to playing in the reserves. Another loan spell could be on the cards for Kenny, or he could already have offers lined up for permanent first team football.
