Marco Silva hasn’t made a final decision on young defender Lewis Gibson’s short-term future, as reported by The Liverpool Echo.
Speaking about the 19-year-old, Silva said: “He needs to work more and more with us to improve, to be more aggressive. He has had good matches during pre-season and we are happy with him.
“Until now, we didn’t decide anything about Lewis, let’s see if he can stay with us, working with us all season playing in the U23s or with another solution. We have the next few days to decide.”
This means that despite the deadline for the Premier League and Championship falling on Thursday, there is currently no decision on whether he’ll be leaving on loan.
The club would still have the option of loaning him to SPFL, League One or League Two clubs until Monday 2nd September though.
The teenager has been given opportunities to impress during preseason, which he has taken – he put in a string of impressive defensive performances, according to The Liverpool Echo, while he also scored against Mainz 05.
The centre-back has represented England up to U18 level, as per Transfermarkt and was part of the squad which won the U17 World Cup in India.
Gibson played every minute of Everton U23s’ final nine games last season, in which they kept three clean sheets on the way to securing the league title, with his form being recognised with March’s Premier League 2 Player of the Month award, as per Everton’s official website.
Considering that, it really could be time for the Everton youngster to make that step up to the first team.
Everton currently have Michael Keane, Yerry Mina, Matthew Pennington and Mason Holgate as their centre-back options, with the latter potentially moving away, as reported by The Daily Mail.
While he may not get too much first-team game time by staying, Gibson will make good cover for now and could get some experience in cup matches.
It would also be very worthwhile for him to learn from those around him, so it is worth Silva keeping the youngster at Goodison Park.
