Lucas Tousart has been identified as a possible replacement for Idrissa Gueye if the Senegalese midfielder leaves, according to Le Quotidien Du Foot.
Gueye could potentially move to Paris Saint-Germain, though the report suggests that he will not be allowed to leave unless a replacement is secured first.
Tousart is said to be potentially open to the move, as Lyon have Jean Lucas, Thiago Mendes, Houssem Aouar and Pape Cheikh Diop in his position.
Tousart started 20 Ligue 1 matches last season, coming on as a substitute in 10 other games.
He didn’t get any goals or assists but came up with some telling defensive contributions, making 2.5 tackles, 0.9 interceptions, 0.7 clearances and 0.4 blocks per match (per WhoScored). Indeed, he was also efficient on the ball, maintaining a pass completion rate of 87.3%.
Gueye started 32 games and came on as a substitute once, unlike Tousart he made two assists. Defensively he made 4.3 tackles, 2.2 interceptions, 1.3 clearances and 0.2 blocks. His pass success rate was marginally lower than Tousart’s at 84.3%.
Tousart may have age on his side at 22-years-old, but it would appear Gueye was by far the better performer defensively last season.
Tousart may be of a similar profile as Gueye judging by the aforementioned statistics but they do also show the Senegalese performing at a much higher level in that role.
There were only four Premier League teams who conceded fewer goals than the Toffees last season and Gueye was an integral component of their defensive solidity, considering the fact he led the way for the side in terms of tackles and interceptions.
Letting him go would be a risk, even if they could have a talented play on their hands in the form of Tousart.
