Responding to a tweet from Goal, Everton supporters have come out to campaign for defender Mason Holgate’s inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad – with some fans hinting that the 23-year-old is better than all of England’s current international crop.
Holgate, who has arguably impressed alongside Yerry Mina in the heart of Everton’s back four this season, reducing former defensive favourite Michael Keane to the bench, is currently winning the favour of supporters who think he deserves an England call-up to the European Championships this summer.
The youngster, compared with Keane, has made more tackles on average this season (1.7) and blocks (0.6) per game whilst amassing the same number of interceptions (1.3), as per WhoScored.com. Keane has also been called up to the England squad by Southgate prior to his spell as second fiddle at Everton, perhaps hinting that these supporters could be correct in their suggestion that Holgate deserves a chance to impress on the international stage.
Here’s what they had to say on Twitter regarding his potential call-up in future.
