Everton have made a move for Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure, according to BBC Sport.
The Hornets have indicated they have no intention of selling the Frenchman to Everton, while the player himself reportedly isn’t interested in a move to a club outside the Premier League’s top six.
The Toffees have already signed Jean-Philippe Gbamin to replace Idrissa Gueye, though with Fabian Delph being brought off after five minutes of a friendly against Werder Bremen on Saturday, as reported by The Daily Mail, Marco Silva may be tempted to bring in another midfielder.
He started 34 Premier League matches last season, coming on as a substitute once, scoring five goals and making six assists, as per WhoScored.
Defensively, he averaged 2 tackles, 1 interception and 1.5 clearances, while he was efficient on the ball with his pass completion rate of 83.5%.
On top of this, the Frenchman completed 1.1 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per match, showing he helped his side move up the pitch.
In contrast, Gbamin started 30 Bundesliga games for Mainz, coming on as a substitute once, scoring two goals and assisting once, as per WhoScored.
The Ivorian made 1.6 tackles, 1 interception and 0.9 clearances per game, while completing 80.4% of his passes throughout the campaign, going forward he played 0.7 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per match.
The only area Gbamin excelled most in was dribbles, which indicates Doucoure could be a better option than the former Mainz man.
However, the pair could come together to replace Gueye’s influence, with the Senegalese midfielder having made 4.3 tackles, 2.2 interceptions and 1.3 clearances per game last season.
Considering how important these contributions were it would be very difficult for one player to replace him, so by playing Gbamin and Doucoure together at the base of the midfield, Everton would have a solid duo who could ensure the defence continues to be protected.
Doucoure would be a very good signing for Everton, though they may struggle to pull this one off considering the fact the player himself seems to be in no rush to leave Vicarage Road for a team outside the top six.
If they can, both he and Gbamin could help replace Gueye in terms of keeping a solid base in the engine room.
