Marco Silva is surely fighting to save his future as Everton manager following a dismal spell of form in recent weeks.

The Portuguese was a long-term target for the Blues after the sacking of Ronald Koeman but the Toffees were forced to wait until this summer to appoint their man. Alongside new director of football, Marcel Brands, Silva made a number of shrewd additions including Richarlison, Andre Gomes and Lucas Digne. However, their success in the transfer market hasn’t transitioned into results on the field.

Defeat against Silva’s former side Watford at the weekend meant the Hornets moved four points clear of the Blues in eight with a game in hand. Everton’s third straight Premier League defeat could force yet another managerial change at Goodison Park. Silva’s job may be safe until the end of the season but owner Farhad Moshiri could be on the lookout for a new boss to lead his project.

One man he should be considering is Shakhtar Donetsk tactician – Paulo Fonseca. The former Portuguese defender started his coaching career immediately after retiring, earning his stripes in the lower divisions of his homeland. Despite a poor spell in charge of Porto, Fonseca enjoyed plenty of success with Braga – leading them to fourth in the league and delivering a domestic cup.

It was announced in May 2016 that Fonseca would replace legendary Mircea Lucescu in Ukraine, winning the double in his first campaign. Yet another league title followed as well as progressing to the Champions League last 16 with a victory over English champions Manchester City.

Fonseca’s coaching style is similar to the current City coach Pep Guardiola – he believes perfect build-up play but isn’t afraid to switch things up at times. He also allows his side to sit deep and break at pace on the counter-attack to devastate the opposition, similar to Jurgen Klopp’s early days as Liverpool manager.

The 45-year-old deserves the chance to prove himself on the biggest stage of all – Everton should seek to appoint him in the summer.
