Everton fans are starting to lose patience with the Toffees yet to make a move in the summer transfer window.
The Blues are paying the price for a miserable summer last season where plenty of money was spent, but their signings failed to impress. New manager Marco Silva was left with one of the largest squads in the Premier League meaning he must offload some fringe players to generate some transfer funds. Wayne Rooney and Ramiro Funes Mori have already left, and more departures are expected.
Signing a new centre-back will be a priority for Silva with Phil Jagielka approaching retirement and Ashley Williams failing to win over the fans. Michael Keane also struggled in his debut season since moving from Burnley. However, landing a long-term centre-back partner could improve his form.
The ideal signing could be Manchester United defender – Victor Lindelof. Valued at £22.5m by Transfermarkt, the Swede joined the Red Devils from Benfica last summer for £31m but made just 13 starts in the Premier League. Jose Mourinho often preferred Chris Smalling and Phil Jones in the heart of the defence.
Mourinho wants a new centre-back this summer which will cast doubt over Lindelof’s future at the club. The Portuguese will not want to lose the defender permanently but could authorise a loan move so he can adapt to life in England. Everton would be the perfect destination.
The 23-year-old was excellent at the World Cup with Sweden and highlighted why United should think twice about letting him leave. He would slot seamlessly into the Everton defence and give Keane a partner he can rely on.
If he is available, it’s a no-brainer for the Toffees.
