Everton supporters have been pretty upbeat in the Transfer Tavern during the international break after seeing their side enter the two-week interruption off the back of only their second Premier League away win of the campaign.
Sam Allardyce’s men went into their most recent league encounter with struggling Stoke City having picked up just one victory in their preceding 15 league matches on their travels, a run which saw them muster a mere eight points along the way. Nonetheless, the Toffees finally got that second success away from Goodison Park last time out as a Cenk Tosun double either side of Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s equaliser sealed all three points for the Merseysiders, in turn moving them to the 40-point mark and 12 points clear of the division’s relegation zone.
Thus, there have been many delighted Evertonians in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their side can build some momentum between now and the end of the season to take into the 2018/19 campaign.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Toffees fans to discuss, not least recent reports linking Chelsea left back Marcos Alonso with a move away during the summer.
And with Leighton Baines 33 years of age and arguably entering the twilight of his career, the Merseysiders should seek to make an audacious move for £31.5 million-rated Alonso (as per Transfermarkt) in a bid to replace the ageing Englishman.
Ultimately, Baines has been a terrific servant for Everton since his move from Wigan Athletic back in 2007, with the 33-year-old having played 396 games for the Toffees, scoring 38 goals and laying on 65 assists in the process.
However, a recent calf injury, which kept him out from November to February, called into question what the future holds post-Baines, and with that looking particularly bleak, the Everton hierarchy may seek to land a long-term replacement for the England international come the summer.
And that is why they must make a move for Alonso.
The 27-year-old has certainly proven his worth in the Premier League since making the move to Chelsea back in 2016, with the Spaniard having played 75 games for Antonio Conte’s side, bagging 13 goals and laying on six assists along the way.
Arguably, Alonso was the best left back or left wing back in the division last season in helping the Blues regain the Premier League title, and while he maybe hasn’t hit those standards this time round, he has still done reasonably well.
Be it defensively or getting forward to aid with attacks, the former Real Madrid star has proven to be adept at both during his short stint at Stamford Bridge, and with free-kick ability to match, the Toffees would be replacing Baines’ excellent set piece skills with someone just as good.
Ultimately, changes are expected at Chelsea this summer with Conte expected to make way as manager, and that could well open up the prospect of some of their stars making the move as well.
And with Everton potentially eyeing up a replacement for Baines, they could do a lot worse than make an audacious bid for 27-year-old Alonso during the close season.
